Within the medical profession, eating disorders are usually clinically defined and diagnosed according to the diagnostic criteria laid out in one of the two following systems:

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders (DSM-5)
The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, tenth revision - ICD-10
