Happy Deepavali/Diwali!

The festival of lights signifies new beginnings, where light prevails over darkness.

It can be a time for gathering, dressing up and sharing in food. This can be joyous, but also challenging for those experiencing or in recovery from an eating disorder.

Here are our tips 🔽

How to navigate festive gatherings?

Celebrations can be tough, but they’re also an opportunity to challenge your eating disorder so that you may enjoy the things you used to again. You might consider identifying a safe person ahead of time, so you feel supported when attending gatherings.

How to navigate festival attire and new clothing?

Getting new clothes for Deepavali/Diwali is a cherished tradition. You might find this challenging if you’re in recovery or experiencing body dysmorphia.

Consider opting for comfortable and affirming clothing and asking supportive family or friends to help you shop.

How to navigate shared meals?

Eating communally might be uncomfortable while in recovery. Remember that it’s ok to focus on connection rather than just food!

Consider familiarising yourself with the menu ahead of time or bring a dish that you feel comfortable with if possible.

Consider the kind of support you would like to receive during this time.

What would help you participate in sharing your favourite festive foods and connecting with your loved ones? Sharing this with a trusted friend, sibling, parent, or other support person is a great first step.
