Come for the adventure, stay for the friends: Why should you walk the Bay of Fires with EDV?

At EDV we’re often asking, what does life look like beyond an eating disorder?

Everyone’s answer is different, but for many it involves exploring what your new, changed relationship to movement is.

We meet so many people who – when the time is right for them – find a lot of joy in movement when it becomes about complementing, not challenging, their mental health.

For example, movement can be about adventure, being in nature, connection to Country, social time, or gentle reflection.

Carers may also be re-negotiating their relationship with movement after the eating disorder journey. Additionally, it can be about making the time for themselves again, especially for pastimes that require big stretches of time.

That’s why Eating Disorders Victoria is partnering with Inspired Adventures to host our very first adventure fundraiser, walking along the Bay of Fires / Larapuna (in Palawa language). Participants join a group of like-minded individuals on a guided walk through the Bay on Palawa Country, all while raising money for free eating disorder care.

Our Carer Coach Vicki, who has previously done a different fundraiser adventure in Tasmania, shares what her experience was like.

What is a fundraiser adventure and how is the experience different to a regular guided adventure?

There are two differences. Firstly, you are with a group who are all passionate about the same cause as yourself and it creates instant bonds and connection, even to strangers. When I was on my walk it was with 11 complete strangers – more than half of them are now lifelong friends and we connect often.

Whilst there is a guide, the experience of the beautiful and precious Tasmanian environment is elevated through that shared connection.

What was your personal highlight of doing a fundraiser adventure?

The people I met for sure. I found my ‘tribe’. Also learning how fragile and unique Takanya/Tarkine is: it’s the last remaining piece of temperate rainforest and is so ancient and so beautiful.

The Bay of Fires was just named Best Australian Beach by Tourism Australia, so I’m sure a similar experience awaits our EDV supporters!

Was there anything you didn’t expect about the experience?

Even though I was already passionate about the environment I learnt so much more than I could have imagined.

I also did not expect to make such deep connections to strangers. My goal on the walk, seeing that I was going alone, was to be pretty introverted and keep to myself and experience the healing of the ancient forest. However, being with a group of like-minded people made that both impossible and amazing! I learned so much from the group.

What would you say to someone considering walking the Bay of Fires for EDV?

I would say just do it. Tasmania is incredible.

It absolutely changed my life doing the adventure, as I gained the confidence to advocate for a cause close to my heart whilst also learning much more about it.

Once you have experienced the beauty of Tasmania it will seep into your soul and change you forever (in an awesome way!).

You can also be sure you’re fundraising for a great cause. I think of the people who have told us Carer Coaching saved their child’s life and how important it is we keep providing these services for free.

If the timing is right for you, we’d love to see you there.
