Victoria’s eating disorder rates are back at peak levels

Victoria’s eating disorder predicament has not gone away, six years after the Coronavirus pandemic, with new data revealing emergency department presentations this year have reached more than 40 cases per week, the same level seen during the worst of the pandemic lockdowns.

The new research report, published by Eating Disorders Victoria, shows the sharp rise in eating disorders seen during the pandemic has not abated, with evidence suggesting prevalence may still be increasing.

The report found eating disorder related emergency department presentations reached more than 40 per week between March and May 2026, returning to the levels recorded during the height of COVID.

Demand for support is also continuing to rise, with Eating Disorders Victoria’s Hub helpline responding to a record more than 3,000 Victorians in 2025/26, with more than 300,000 Victorians estimated to be living with an eating disorder.

Eating Disorders Victoria found only three in ten people experiencing an eating disorder access treatment. At the same time, long wait times and strict eligibility criteria lead to breaks in recovery momentum.

But the research reveals the issue is not simply about growing numbers, eating disorders are also becoming increasingly complex.

Eating Disorders Victoria has since seen an 80 per cent increase in comorbidities requiring senior consultation over the past four years, while the average number of counselling sessions has increased by 41 per cent.

Eating Disorders Victoria CEO, Paul Bird commented on this saying,

“Eating disorders cannot be treated in isolation, we have to look at the whole person and the context around them, and that means connecting people with the right support at the right time.

“Victoria has a leading system of care for eating disorders, but navigating that system can be complex, particularly for people and families who are already struggling.

“This is where Eating Disorders Victoria plays a crucial role as the glue in the system, providing free, immediate, no-barrier support and helping people navigate the multidisciplinary care these illnesses require.

“Many people describe coming to EDV as a turning point in their illness, and we know that getting the right support early can be life-changing.”

26-year-old Sam, has experienced the reality behind an eating disorder.

Eating disorder recovery can be incredibly challenging, and for many people it can be a silent crisis that those around them don’t even realise they’re going through.

“My own recovery has shown me that recovery isn’t just about overcoming the eating disorder – it’s about making peace with your body and with yourself. Finding that peace has brought so much freedom to my life and Eating Disorder Victoria helped me persist through the most difficult of times.”
